The feeding of a soy protein high-fat diet (21g isoflavone in 100 g protein) to C57BL/6 mice result in the reduction of plasma cholesterol levels, increased the resistance of LDL against oxidation, and decreased the atherosclerotic lesion area (Kirk et al, 1998). Humans who eat three soy bars (containing 12 mg genistein and 7 mg daidzein each) daily for 2 weeks could increase the plasma isoflavone level and the resistance of LDL to Cu-catalyzed oxidation (Tikkanen et al, 1998). |
| Some properties of soy isoflavones, such as preventing osteoporosis (Anderson, 1999) and lowering cholesterol levels (Lichtenstein, 1998), may suggest an estrogen-related mechanism.
Isoflavones are believed to exert their effects through ER signaling pathway because of the structural similarity to estrogen. However, experimental studies have found that isoflavones at different concentrations may exhibit different effects (Martin et al, 1978). Genistein at concentrations lower than 1 (J. |

Researchers say that it is the unsaturated fats in nuts that help lower cholesterol levels. Nuts also contain plant components with antioxidant properties, which can slow the oxidation or "rusting" of LDL (bad) cholesterol. University of Georgia research has confirmed that nuts also contain plant sterols, which have been in the news recently for their cholesterol-lowering ability. All other plant sources of fats have the same effect for the same reasons and this just confirms what I have said: good fats will lower your cholesterol levels.

As expected, despite being on medications, Chip's blood test showed all the evidence of killer-gene activation: high insulin level, signs of diabetes, high triglycerides, and high cholesterol levels, as well as signs of inflammation. Beverly was right to be concerned: the gun was loaded, cocked, and ready to fire! Beverly's labs were much better than Chip's, but her lipoprotein(a), perhaps the most dangerous form of "cholesterol," was very high. Despite being a physician, until then she had never had her Lp(a) level tested.

SYMPTOMS
TREATMENT GOAL
• Frequent urination
• Excessive thirst
• Extreme tiredness
• Weight loss
• Smell of nail polish (acetone) on the breath
• Thrush
• Blurred vision
The main aim of treatment of both types of diabetes is to maintain blood glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels as near to normal as possible. This, together with a healthy lifestyle, will help to improve wellbeing and protect against long-term damage to the body's major organs. |

A typical vegetarian diet includes many cholesterol-lowering foods, such as soy milk, soy burgers, oats, almonds, beans, and plenty of fruits and vegetables, all of which have been individually found to lower cholesterol levels. In one study, after 1 month, participants' LDL levels fell by 29 percent—a drop similar to that seen with some statin drugs. Other cholesterol-lowering benefits of a vegetarian diet include a higher consumption of plant stanols (2 grams a day is ideal) and soluble fiber (reaching the recommended 25 grams a day is relatively easy on a vegetarian diet). |
| This has long been known as an effective way to help lower your cholesterol because saturated fat raises harmful low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels.
Make the most of good fats. Next, boost your intake of healthful or "smart" fats, such as plant and fish omega-3s and monounsaturated fats (like olive and canola oil, ground flaxseed, and avocados), and your plant sterols and plant stanol esters—conveniently available in margarines such as Take Control or Benecol. |
| Sabate, nut-rich diets improved the cholesterol levels of participants in dietary intervention trials. Epidemiological studies have linked nuts not only to a significantly reduced risk of dying from heart disease but also to overall longevity. As a baby boomer who is closing in on 50, that sounds pretty good to me.
Antioxidant-rich almonds. It's practically common knowledge that fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants, but did you know that many nuts are, too? A recent study concluded that in terms of antioxidant content, almonds are right up there with produce. |
| The strongest dietary factor behind high cholesterol levels, in fact, involves the saturated fat and trans fat we eat. (Dietary cholesterol and obesity are also related to LDL levels, but to a lesser extent.) You might be thinking, Tell me something I don't know!
Well, how about this: New research suggests that even if your cholesterol isn't high, too much saturated fat may raise the risk of diabetes and some types of cancers, as well as ovarian disorders and other health problems.

| For example, simply incorporating four cholesterol-lowering foods into your diet has been shown to lower cholesterol levels up to 30 percent, reducing the need for cholesterol-lowering drugs (statins) according to studies conducted at the University of Toronto. |
| Even more alarming, most people who suffer a heart attack have only mildly elevated cholesterol levels. (Borderline high cholesterol is between 200 and 239 mg/dL; desirable levels are lower than 200 mg/dL.) These 100 million people can all benefit from even a 10 to 20 percent reduction in total cholesterol. Two simple steps to follow:
Take saturated fat down a few notches. The first thing many experts advise when you need to lower your cholesterol? Eat less saturated fat, which is found in animal products and dairy foods. |

Recommendations for treating high cholesterol include a well-balanced, low-fat (not nonfat), low-sugar diet; daily exercise; supplemental nutrients to elevate HDL levels; and regular monitoring of the cholesterol levels. Enzymes can help support health by improving digestion and proper absorption and elimination of fats and sugars and by improving the health of blood vessels and the heart. |

REPPED: A recent study published in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" shows that eating certain foods can lower your cholesterol levels just as well as taking statin drugs. This is the second study we've seen revealing that certain foods are as effective, or even more effective, than prescription drugs in regulating biochemical markers such as cholesterol levels or in treating conditions such as chronic depression. |

Sure enough, when we tested the two of them, Mark was insulin-resistant, hypertensive, had high LDL ("bad") and low HDL ("good") cholesterol levels, and high triglycerides. Pansy's results weren't much better than her husband's. Their genes were literally killing them. I assured the couple that if they both went on Diet Evolution, we could turn things around, and they agreed. An examination of their eating habits revealed the typical Western diet, helped along by huge amounts of "healthy" rice, since Pansy is Asian. Out it went! In went my dietary program and a host of supplements. |

For those of you who may be taking statins right now, you have probably seen an amazing reduction in your bad cholesterol levels, perhaps as much as 20%. "What a great drug!" It's a popular refrain, one I have heard from friends and colleagues who take the drugs. However, there is convincing evidence that statins aren't a miracle solution.
First, taking a statin won't prevent you from having a heart attack or dying if you have heart disease. It only slightly lowers your risk and, again, only if you are known to have heart disease. |

Despite what you have been told about how important your genes are in determining your risk of high cholesterol, and in how trans fats elevate your LDL, my research has demonstrated that the sugar and starches in foods you eat almost completely determine your cholesterol levels and the ratio of good to bad cholesterol.5

The following self-help suggestions can also help in managing cholesterol levels.
Diet: Cut down on all forms of saturated fat, including red meat, cream, butter, cheese, and full-fat milk. It will also be helpful to avoid any items that are a source of refined, white sugar, including cakes, pastries, chocolate, and sweet carbonated drinks. Increase the amount of high-fiber foods in your diet, opting for whole grains, pulses, beans, and lentils over red meat and French fries. Oily fish also appears to benefit the heart and circulatory system. |

If you do that, you're going to have greatly enhanced cardiovascular health, and you're going to have normal cholesterol levels. It's basic cause and effect. This follows the laws of biochemistry: if you eat the right foods, you can't help but to have healthy cholesterol levels.
As you probably know, I've put my own statistics out there as an example for quite some time. |

They also exhibit lower cholesterol levels and slight improvements in total cholesterol. Numerous clinical studies have been published that demonstrate aloe vera's antidiabetic properties.
Diabetics are also likely to benefit strongly from aloe vera's blood enhancements (see below). Since aloe reverses "sludge blood" and boosts circulation to extremities, diabetics suffering from peripheral neuropathy (hands and feet going numb) are likely to benefit strongly from aloe vera supplements.

If you take Power Immune on a regular basis, you'll also notice an improvement in triglycerides and cholesterol levels (thanks to the garlic and ginger ingredients), meaning you might also be able to transition off your statin drugs. ASPIRIN FOR THE PREVENTION OF HEART DISEASE
We've all heard about the importance of aspirin for the prevention of heart disease. But is it really true?
In a recent analysis of the published literature on people without heart disease, researchers examined a total of 51,342 women and 44,114 men from a range of studies who did not have heart disease but had risk factors for heart disease. |
| In the Stroke Prevention by Aggressive Reduction in cholesterol levels (SPARCL) study 4,731 patients with a history of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) (see page 74) within the past six months and LDL cholesterol of 100-190 mg per deciliter were randomly assigned to receive atorvastatin or placebo for five years. A 2.2% reduction in strokes was at the borderline of statistical significance. There were no reductions in total mortality or cardiovascular mortality in patients treated with atorvastatin vs. placebo. |

Ezetimibe (Zetia) is a drug that blocks absorption of LDL cholesterol by the small intestine, thus lowering LDL cholesterol levels in the blood. Zetia acts on cells lining the small intestine to interfere with their uptake of cholesterol by a mechanism that is not completely understood. Side effects of Zetia include fever, headache, muscle pain, runny nose, and sore throat. More rarely it can cause hives and liver damage. Zetia is sometimes used on its own by people who cannot tolerate the side effects of statins, which are reviewed in the following section. |

This test measures levels of triglycerides (fat in the blood), high-density lipid protein (HDL, good cholesterol), and low-density lipid protein (LDL, bad cholesterol). cholesterol levels are measured in milligrams of cholesterol per deciliter of blood (mg/dL) and fall into the following catergories:
• Desirable level: Cholesterol in the blood is less than 200 mg/dL.
• Borderline high level: Cholesterol in the blood is 200-239 mg/dL.
• High level: Cholesterol in the blood is 240 mg/dL or above. |

In our rush to lower cholesterol levels, rather than looking at the cause for elevation, we have created a population with dangerously depleted levels of C0Q10 in muscle cells. The consequence of this enzyme blockade may take up to a year to develop, but if you have muscle pains or weakness or have developed congestive heart failure, consider supplementing with a daily dose of C0Q10. This agent is also one of the only nutrients other than niacin that can lower a particularly dangerous type of cholesterol called lipoprotein Lp(a). |

Beta-glucan helps lower cholesterol levels and significantly reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. The USDA ruled that companies making oats for cereal can make the claim that their product helps reduce the risk of heart disease, though certain stipulations exist, one of which is that a serving must have at least a V2 gram of beta-glucan.
Beta-glucans enhance the body's immune system by turbocharging its response to bacterial infection. |
